Victory Is Ours!  If only morale based...
I know you saw the draft, and I know it was like 3+ weeks ago, but still I wanted to run a draft story -- because the type of Rammie fan I am, you see, like you, is that I'll take any win over the Buffs...

I don't care what it is, Football, Basketball, Club Hockey, Lacrosse, Rugby, Swimming, Volleyball, Chess, Ping Pong, Lawn Darts (Jarts), neighborhood riots (okay not those) or anything!  I know you love it too...

That's why I took special time to reflect on the 2001 NFL draft.  The graphic to the left hopefully says it all... Rams - 5 / Queefaloes - Zip.

What a long strange ride it's been from NFL obscurity to prominence over CU -at least for a year.  Wasn't it that before the Sonny Lubick era, NFL interest in CSU was sparse at best.  The Rammies did manage to get a few serious contenders to the next level -- like Kelley Stouffer.

The Buffs on the other hand, seemed to regularly churn out players into the NFL, probably from being historically competitive at a much higher level, as well as having greater conference and national exposure.  Or maybe it was just the criminal 1990's teams that pushed some players into the NFL -- like Rashan Salaam.

State has made a charge over the past ten years, turning out numerous quality players to the NFL.  For some of the current players in the league today see the next story.  For a final CSU draft recap:

Player Team Round Overall Pick
John Howell - S Tampa Bay 4th 117th
Rick Crowell - LB Miami 6th 188th
Tim Stuber - OL San Diego Free Agent
Frank Rice - WR Tampa Bay Free Agent
Mike Mackenzie Tampa Bay Free Agent

For the complete breakdown of CSU and any team, see ESPN's Draft Report by School.

Seriously though {$EPIData_11_first_name:Rammie Fan}, what do you think?  I'd love to hear your feedback on this.  Wouldn't you all like to hear {$EPIData_11_first_name:other Rammie Fan}'s opinions?  Please comment to: [email protected]

... when I'm 64...
I know you all think of this kind of stuff too... I'm just an insomniac, so I write about it.  As of last year, we trailed CU in all time football victories 419 to 611.  That's 611 for the Buffs, by the way, lest you get confused.  Granted, they've recorded 111 years of pigskin competition to our 103... so even if you remove their average season over the 111 years -- about 5.5 wins and 3.3 losses (plus .32 ties so we'll go 6-3 for 8 seasons) that only drops 48 games off their tally for 571.  The other way is to add 8 years of our average season over 103 years.  That my friends figures at 4.06 wins and 4.43 losses with .32 ties.  Let's even give us the edge and call it 5-5 on average.  Our total wins goes to 449.

Here's the data by the way, in case you want to plug it all into Excel like I did in a sleepless stupor most of this week:

So the first big question for Rammie fans is... when will CSU Football be .500 overall?  The next question is when will we surpass CU?  Then let's look at AFA, WYO, and BYU for fun...

When does CSU get to .500?  Okay, so here's where we start the what if scenarios... like what if we went 10-2 over the next five years... how about 10-2 over the next decade?  Or even 7-5 for 40 years?  See the following table.  For example, 10/2/5 is to say 10 wins and 2 losses per season averaged for 5 years.  The following fields then adjust the Years | Wins | Losses | Ties | Games | Win Pct values based upon the Current stats:

Okay, okay, I'll get a wee bit more scientific about it, and yet it's still very scenarioistic (hey, I just coined a term -- or made a word up) and probably invalid.  All you accounting grads and folks who took statistics, I can hear you grumbling -- knock it off!

If you take the last 11 years (roughly a decade) the average Rams season is 7.636 wins to 4.363 losses.  (FYI, No ties for CSU recorded between 1990 and 2000.  The last Rammie tie by the way was in 1989 when Earle's squad tied Eastern Michigan at Hughes.) Okay, so let's use 8 wins and 4 losses as our benchmark.  The above table basically shows, if the Rams average 8-4 over the next 10 years - that puts us 2 games over the .500 mark.  We know that's possible, because by golly, we just did it in the last decade (11 years).  If you assume some rebuilding years, go with 7-5 well, it's going to take a tad bit longer, like about 9 years longer, but even with that, 19 years from now .500 on the nose.

I'm presuming this will be within my lifetime either way.  Seeing as the average life expectancy for men like me in America is 73.2, I figure I've got 43.7years left here.  Heck, given that, here's the best I might see for CSU when I check out:
