RamSpam - The Official 'Unofficial' CSU Rams News & Commentary
Volume 1, Issue 3

December 14, 2000

Welcome to the second issue of this hastily thrown together news and commentary.  The intent is to provide readers (those who can stomach it) with information, news, commentary , insight, and general minutiae on our beloved CSU Rams.   Topics, suggestions, commentary, rants, complaints, tips, inside information are all much appreciated.  Simply reply to the list or send to [email protected] and you may see your words immortalized here in the future.  What a thrill.  RamSpam is published on a sporadic frequency or to be specific: "Occurring at irregular intervals; having no pattern or order in time".   Note that we did consider a spasmodic or semioccasional schedule, but felt that sporadic was most appropriate.

All Hail Pete Carroll... Sonny Stays!

Sonny LubickWow.  We hadn't had the chance to have this discussion yet, but you knew it was coming... Given the success that Coach Lubick has had in the past eight season, the thought that maybe we don't pay him enough money gets poked at again... The fact that he stayed, well what does that mean really?  For one, it doesn't necessarily guarantee he'll never leave, does it?   For another, Lubick was never really offered the job, just interviewed for it.   Of course according to AD Weiser, Lubick wasn't even interviewed -- Weiser said USC had never formally contacted him and therefore there was not an interview, at least a sanctioned one.  Hmm...  NIce how Lubick was conveniently available whilst recruiting in the San Diego area -- an area where he's well known to local football fans and likely USC boosters, given his success over the years at purging the high school recruits from the area and luring them to somewhat less balmy Ft. Collins.  Probably just stopped over and visited with the Trojans about a preemo, top-tier coaching position at a historically significant program on his way to SeaWorld.

Rams fans like me had to be most concerned after the first two coaches offered the job had turned it down.  Next it appeared that the Chargers' Mike Riley would get the nod, but turns out he would not be released by his NFL owner from his contract without a nasty fight.  I like that Chargers owner, whoever they are.  Then our savior - Pete Carroll of all people.  I never really cared much one way or another for Pete as an NFL coach, but I'm a big fan now, if just for this... he filled the spot and our revered Sonny is still here.  But for how long?  Will Sonny finish his career with the Rams?  Let me know your thoughts at [email protected].

Liberty Bowl
Here are some fun and interesting comparative numbers on the Rams and Cardinals.  No, I don't have that much spare time, but I do read the newspaper in the restroom... it gives you a lot of time to think -- you all have been there, don't give me that.  Anyway, both teams finished winners of their conferences with equivelant 9-2 records.  Both teams had a victory over a Div. I-AA school (CSU over East Tennesee State and Louisville over Grambling).

In general the numbers seem to support the notion that these two teams are evenly matched.  In the overall analysis Louisville by the numbers appears to have had the tougher season -- specifically they've played better rated competition and have beaten them more soundly.   Louisville's highest ranked opponent on Scripps Howard power ratings was Florida State at #1. The Rammies highest SH power rated opponent is ASU at 27.  Note however that even with FSU at #1, the average SH power rating for opponents gives only a .7 advantage to the Cardinals.  This should be a ball game that is very, very competitive.
