RamSpam - The Official 'Unofficial' CSU Rams News & Commentary
Volume 1, Issue 2

November 23, 2000

Welcome to the second issue of this hastily thrown together news and commentary.  The intent is to provide readers (those who can stomach it) with information, news, commentary , insight, and general minutiae on our beloved CSU Rams.   Topics, suggestions, commentary, rants, complaints, tips, inside information are all much appreciated.  Simply reply to the list or send to [email protected] and you may see your words immortalized here in the future.  What a thrill.  RamSpam is published on a sporadic frequency or to be specific: "Occurring at irregular intervals; having no pattern or order in time".   Note that we did consider a spasmodic or semioccasional schedule, but felt that sporadic was most appropriate.

Liberty News and Notes...

First things first -- last time I said that  I hoped we got a good contingent of fans in New Orleans.  Well some readers were polite enough to inform me that CSU was not in fact participating in the Sugar Bowl this year, but rather the Liberty Bowl, which will be played in Memphis.  Thanks Darren... that saved me some headaches with the airlines to change my tickets....  It's about 395.3 miles from New Orleans to Memphis... in case you were curious...

Look at that beauty to the right, that's the AXA cup, AXA of course being the sponsor of the apparently now Tennessee-based Liberty Bowl.  Easily mistaken for a fraternal order of some sort.

The Rammies have shot number two at the cup...here are some fun Liberty Bowl facts and figures.  CSU becomes only the 4th team in the 42 year history of the Liberty Bowl (herewith and fore-referenced from now on as "LB").  Can you guess the other teams that did this?  Well... here they are.  Penn State played in the first two LB's ever, 1959 and 1960 beating Alabama and Oregon respectively.   The other two teams that have earned repeat LB visits are our very own intrastate rivals!  The Buffs in 1969 and 1970 (beating Alabama and losing to Tulane) and the Air Force flyboys went to an LB record  4 consecutive appearances (1989 - 1992).  The Falcons are 2-2 in LB games.

CSU's first LB appearance, the 17-23 loss to Southern Miss resulted in the third  highest attendance ever for the LB - 56,570.   Air Force owns the top two spots: 61,497 in 1991 and 60,128 in 1989.  It'd be nice to steal that mark away from the fly boys -- at the same time evening our LB record to 1-1.

What's With The Gear?
I know this has happened to you, or you've thought about it... maybe you're not that Ram crazy though... I live in Longmont.  It's not Boulder.  It's close.  It's equally close to Loveland, which is definitely not Boulder and is of course nearly Ft. Collins.  Maybe it's different elsewhere, but in Longmont I'm frustrated by the over abundance of Buffs paraphernalia and lack of CSU gear in general merchandise and specialty sports stores.   Entering the Twin Peaks Mall in Longmont last week through the JCPenney, and a cursory look through the boys tee shirts that areramsgear1.jpg (26294 bytes) located near the entrance showed this phenomenon to be occurring still.  Mind you I'm *not* thinking I can wear young boys size tee shirts by any stretch (no pun intended) -- the department is JUST THERE when you walk in... Anyway, what is up with that?  We need more young Rammie fans walking around wearing a 9-2 teams shirt rather than a soon to be 3-8 teams.  (although as I mentioned, I think support for Colorado sports in general is a good thing, so I sort of fly in the face of my own statement here).  Anyway, just thought I'd mention it... what do you think?  Is it like this in Loveland?   Elsewhere?  Case in point online -- a quick check of "the fan shop" at http://cbs.sportsline.com shows 9 items for the Buffs and only 2 items for the Rams...  I'd also to be interested to know what out of staters, either sports savvy or newbies think of the Rammies?  Do they know that a team other than the Buffs exists?  10 years ago I bet the answer would've been no 9 times out of 10.   I wonder what it is today?  Any insight from the field?   Let me know at [email protected].

Guest Rammie "Ram"blings...
Well... I solicited your feedback and comments, and I got it!  Great!  Send more!  Here are some news and commentary style thoughts from fellow Rammie Peter Galvin:

11/20/00 - I still have a hard time getting the picture of the Air Force vs Rams game out of my head with it being 30 below wind-chill, and snow. Wow, imagine braving that for 3 or 4 hours. This game ranks as one of the best ever that I have seen, as far as edge of seat nail biting excitement. (despite the final result). The game seemed similar to the Notre Dame vs Air Force game...

As for CU. I sincerely hope...as a CSU alum, that CU has a strong year next year. It makes it so much more exciting to have close games. ...and I like cheering for the Buffs whenever they aren't playing the Rams. Good clean fun. Kind of like cheering for Green Bay when they aren't up against the Broncos. :-)

Thanks Peter... I too root for Colorado based football.  Only when the Rammies play the Buffaloes are they referred to as the "Beefaloes" and the "Flyboys" and they are the scourge of the earth.   Hey, nasty or nastier nicknames for rivals could be a fun upcoming feature... send your submissions to [email protected]!
